2024 Toronto International Film Festival

December 4, 2024

Festival Coverage from Andrew Swafford, and Grace Winburne, and Zach Dennis

Cinematary had another great year at TIFF in 2024! Below you’ll find long-form reviews of eleven narrative features from seven different countries, (almost!) all of which we heartily recommend. Four of these films — Anora, Bird, Rumours, and The Substance — have already premiered in the US to great acclaim, with most of the rest coming in early 2025. Hopefully this coverage puts a few films on your radar! If you’d like to hear us take a more conversational approach to analyzing these movies, you can hear our dispatch from this year’s TIFF on Episode 483 of the Cinematary podcast.

2023 Toronto International Film Festival

January 12, 2024

Festival Coverage from Zach Dennis and Andrew Swafford

This year’s TIFF was perhaps Cinematary’s most enjoyable experience at the festival yet, as we both saw a plethora of great movies and very few that seemed as though they missed the mark. Below you’ll find long-form reviews of eight narrative features and two avant-garde short films that kept us thinking long after the credits rolled. Almost half — American Fiction, The Boy and the Heron, The Holdovers — have already played to wide audiences to widespread praise, but we hope you’ll also seek out those that are a bit off the beaten path.

2022 Toronto International Film Festival

November 15, 2022

In full force for the first time since the pandemic, our return to the Toronto International Film Festival didn’t disappoint. There’s always a feeling of attempting to capture everything — every movie being discussed, the “big” picks, the smaller world cinema submissions that don’t garner as much spotlight and also explore the lush and vibrant city of Toronto. This year was no different. It was helpful to have two other companions along the way from Cinematary so we three could experience the festival. Here are our reviews of films viewed between myself, Andrew Swafford and Reid Ramsey at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. — Zach Dennis

2020 Knoxville Horror Film Festival

November 2, 2020

Festival Coverage by Andrew Swafford and Jessica Carr

Well, it was certainly a weird year to have a Horror Festival considering it feels like 2020 itself has been a living nightmare. I really do appreciate all the hard work that the Knoxville Horror Fest team put into making this year’s festival feel safe. They hosted all of the evening features at the Parkway Drive-in in Maryville and created two different tracks for daytime festival goers knowing that theater space was going to be at a limited capacity. Also, all theater attendees were required to wear masks at all times, which was really comforting to me.

For ten days in September, the Toronto International Film Festival screened over 50 feature films from around the world. Zach was able to “attend” the festival for several days and, during that span, caught 15 features from 6 different countries.

SXSW 2020 Shorts Program

May 11, 2020

Festival Coverage by Jessica Carr

Amazon Prime Video & SXSW came together to showcase a small portion of the films that were going to screen at the festival. The filmmakers who opted to participate had their shorts streamed on Amazon Prime from April 27 to May 6. I was able to catch 6 short films that were featured in the program. Although I thought the overall lineup was pretty limited, I tried to watch the short films that I found most appealing. It was nice to see fresh films from upcoming filmmakers even at a limited capacity.

Wexner Cinema Revival 2020

March 16, 2020

Festival Coverage by Miranda Barnewall

Back for its sixth year, the Wexner Center for the Arts, located in the heart of The Ohio State University’s campus, hosted its annual film festival, Cinema Revival: A Festival of Film Restoration. As the name implies, this festival is a celebration of film preservation and screens recent preservation projects from the past year. Included in the festival’s program are discussions of techniques and challenges in film preservation. I was lucky enough to attend the majority of the festival (Thursday through Sunday), and have chosen to talk about the films and events that struck me the most. Because this festival is focused on preservation, I talk about the preservation issues and explanations surrounding these projects when possible.

2019 Knoxville Horror Film Festival

November 4, 2019

Festival Coverage by Andrew Swafford

For eleven years running, the Knoxville Horror Film Fest has consistently shared a diverse array of horror films: new indies and old favorites, short films both local and international, atmospheric mood pieces and splatter-heavy exploitation pictures. This year was no exception, and actually offered a stronger selection than last year’s 10th anniversary extravaganza. Over the course of five days, I was able to catch four regional premieres, four remastered cult classics, and a whole lot of shorts – including one I helped get made!

Festival Coverage by Lydia Creech and Miranda Barnewall

For three days in May, the 5th annual Nitrate Picture Show, the world’s first festival of film conservation, screened 9 shorts and 9 features at the Dryden Theater at the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, NY, all from nitrate film prints. Nitrate film was the first kind of stock used for motion pictures, beginning in 1889 and going until 1951, when safety stock on an acetate base was introduced. Lydia and Miranda were able to catch all of the screenings, in addition to attending lectures and tours of the Eastman’s preservation facilities.

2019 Sundance Film Festival

February 6, 2019

Festival Coverage by Jessica Peña

We’ve all been young at some point. We’ve all probably loved something, someone, lost touch with ourselves, regained ourselves. To come of age can mean to relinquish your pains, trade them for new beginnings, and even let them simmer in the hopes that you’ll eventually figure this all out. It can mean finally putting yourself first, forgiving the past that’s shaped you, or finding common ground with others through mischief. Five distinctively unique films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival explore those desires and pains. From Chicago to a snoozy beachside town in Uruguay, these five films are examples of our evolving human experiences.

Q&A With Rotimi Rainwater, Director of Lost in America

May 29, 2018

Festival Coverage by Jessica Carr

On May 10th, Rotimi Rainwater’s documentary Lost in America premiered at the Nashville Film Festival. The documentary focuses on youth homelessness in America. It is a film that is near and dear to Rainwater’s heart because he was also homeless at one point in his life. In the film, Rainwater travels the country to shed some light on the epidemic of youth homelessness in America- highlighting issues like: human trafficking, the foster care system, youth rejected because of their sexuality, domestic violence, abuse and more. It also examines what many organizations, politicians and other public figures are doing (or not doing) to help these youths.

Cinematary's own Jessica Carr spoke with Rainwater about his film and why he thinks making this documentary was important.
